About the Item
No. 172 is a unique painting by contemporary artist Hongyu Zhang. The painting is made with Indian ink and charcoal on kraft paper mounted on canvas. Dimensions are 100 × 65 cm (39.3 × 25.5 inches). Dimensions of the framed artwork are 105 x 70 cm (41.3 × 27.5 in). The artwork is signed, sold framed and comes with a certificate of authenticity.
The artwork stands as a powerful testament to Zhang’s deep connection with the traditions of calligraphy and classical Chinese painting, while simultaneously venturing into a raw, expressionistic realm. This tension is heightened by the use of kraft paper, whose yellowish ochre hue provides a warm, earthy base that amplifies the stark and dramatic interplay between black ink and charcoal.
The portrait immediately engages the viewer through the intimate essence of its subject, conveyed not through realistic depiction but through emotion and sensation. The face emerges as a dense web of restless, feverish lines—thin, sharp charcoal marks intersect with broader, fluid gestures of ink. By manipulating the ink’s dilution, Zhang achieves a rich spectrum of greys and blacks, producing striking contrasts of shadow and light that evoke fatigue, introspection, and inner turmoil.
For Hongyu Zhang, the line itself is the foundation of his portraits. He explains: “I work with lines. When I create a portrait, I draw each line and every brushstroke by applying the principles of calligraphy. Each line has its own life, and together—with their strength, movement, and rhythm—they create an energetic space.” In N° 172, this space exerts a magnetic pull, inviting the viewer to interpret the seemingly chaotic yet masterfully controlled script that feels invented to capture the soul’s hidden depths. The artist adds that his subjects do not exist in the external world; they are, in truth, self-portraits: “All my portraits are me.”

Zhang Hongyu
Hongyu Zhang’s artworks take root in calligraphy and traditional Chinese painting. The line creates the fundamental unity of all his works, particularly his portraits, which have a striking expressive power. The artist draws them on different mediums placed directly on the floor, with music helping him to find the strength, rhythm and movement of each work. He creates an energetic space that attracts and captivates, inviting us to decipher the artist’s nervous writing, which seems to have been invented to understand the depths of the soul. “For me, a work is the meeting between a subject and the artist’s thoughts, his experiences. It is about giving an impression, translating a feeling... This approach is central to the aesthetic system of traditional Chinese painting: it is more about expressing a sensation than painting a reality.’’
