About the Item
No. 209 is a unique painting by contemporary artist Hongyu Zhang. The painting is made with India ink, acrylic, charcoal and pastel on canvas, dimensions are 140 × 100 cm (55.1 × 39.4 in).
The artwork is signed, sold unframed and comes with a certificate of authenticity.
Under the layers of pastel and ink, the man's face appears to be moving in this portrait. A true "human landscape" where the lines disappear outside of the painting. Very faint traditional Chinese characters created with a brush and China ink behind the head blend into the stunning background of copper colour.
Hongyu Zhang’s technique is part of the oldest and richest artistic heritage in the human history. The artist fuses techniques from his ancestors with acrylic, oils and pastels from the West. He works on different mediums placed directly on the floor. The expression, however, is truly from western inspiration, and the influence of engraving is obvious in his paintings.

Zhang Hongyu
Hongyu Zhang’s artworks take root in calligraphy and traditional Chinese painting. The line creates the fundamental unity of all his works, particularly his portraits, which have a striking expressive power. The artist draws them on different mediums placed directly on the floor, with music helping him to find the strength, rhythm and movement of each work. He creates an energetic space that attracts and captivates, inviting us to decipher the artist’s nervous writing, which seems to have been invented to understand the depths of the soul. “For me, a work is the meeting between a subject and the artist’s thoughts, his experiences. It is about giving an impression, translating a feeling... This approach is central to the aesthetic system of traditional Chinese painting: it is more about expressing a sensation than painting a reality.’’
