This work, executed in ink, charcoal, and acrylic on kraft paper mounted on canvas, reveals a richly layered and tactile surface. The portrait reflects the profound influence of calligraphy and traditional Chinese painting on the artist’s practice.
Trained in calligraphy from a young age, Hongyu Zhang has remained devoted to the expressive potential of the line—the foundation of this portrait. As the artist explains: “I work with the lines. When I create a portrait, I trace each line and give each brushstroke by applying the principles of calligraphy.
Each line has its life, and together—with their own strength, movement, and rhythm—they compose a spatial energy.”
Here, the line becomes both chaotic and deliberate: charcoal, applied in quick, nervous strokes, defines the facial features much like a topographical map reveals the relief of a landscape through the density of its contours.
What primarily drives the artist is not likeness, but essence—the attempt to translate an inner state such as determination, introspection, or weariness rather than to reproduce a face faithfully. Influenced by the great expressionists, Zhang shares their ambition “to reveal the human being at the height of his psychological tension.” The kraft paper background, in its muted, earthy beige, lends warmth and texture, subtly animating the complexion and amplifying the raw emotional charge of this deeply psychological portrait.

Zhang Hongyu
Hongyu Zhang’s artworks take root in calligraphy and traditional Chinese painting. The line creates the fundamental unity of all his works, particularly his portraits, which have a striking expressive power. The artist draws them on different mediums placed directly on the floor, with music helping him to find the strength, rhythm and movement of each work. He creates an energetic space that attracts and captivates, inviting us to decipher the artist’s nervous writing, which seems to have been invented to understand the depths of the soul. “For me, a work is the meeting between a subject and the artist’s thoughts, his experiences. It is about giving an impression, translating a feeling... This approach is central to the aesthetic system of traditional Chinese painting: it is more about expressing a sensation than painting a reality.’’
