About the Item
Sandra Cohen’s “Calistan” is a 16 x 16 x 1 inch acrylic and mixed media painting on cradled wood with a lush painterly background of green and pink under black laser transfers. Under red lines overlaid in concentric loops, a hard drive at the left disgorges a small reclining nude woman along with enormous strawberries. Inspired by the Frank Black song of the same title, the lyric “yippee-yay I don’t know” falls from the hard drive’s data as a surprising new hybrid evolves. This painting is unframed with white painted sides, and the signature is on the back.
Sandra Cohen’s dreamlike painting and mixed media work explores the paradoxical nature she finds everywhere. Cohen layers a constantly shifting ground of memory with snippets of lyrics, invasive ‘earworms’, and the human tendency to create order from chaos. Music is intimately entwined with memory for Cohen, who has been a performing musician and songwriter. She also has a deep interest in science, especially the concepts of modern physics. Using techniques that vary from wet to dry and tight to loose, and processes that may weave between digital and tactile, the act of creating the work also reflects what she hopes emerges: glimpses of a true/false spectrum wavering into being as lustrous, rhythmic, and often darkly humorous hybrids.
