About the Item
"Dark Matter" by Sandra Cohen is 14 x 14 x 1 inch acrylic painting on crradled wood in bold yellow sand black. A disintegrating black circle (made of circles) creates another sun-like one within, where a baby's hand seems to grasp at the next one forming. This is a musing on the fractal relationship between Dark Matter, Black Holes and the birth of Suns; destruction and creation, children and the metabolization of parents as feed: endless processes repeating over aeons, everything recycled through Time. The sides are finished in black and this piece is ready to hang, with or without framing. It is signed on the back.
Sandra Cohen’s dreamlike painting and mixed media work explores the paradoxical nature she finds everywhere. Cohen layers a constantly shifting ground of memory with snippets of lyrics, invasive ‘earworms’, and the human tendency to create order from chaos. Music is intimately entwined with memory for Cohen, who has been a performing musician and songwriter. She also has a deep interest in science, especially the concepts of modern physics. Using techniques that vary from wet to dry and tight to loose, and processes that may weave between digital and tactile, the act of creating the work also reflects what she hopes emerges: glimpses of a true/false spectrum wavering into being as lustrous, rhythmic, and often darkly humorous hybrids.
