Sandra Cohen’s “Don’t hurt yourself” is a 24 x 24 x .75 inch acrylic painting on canvas, in blue, yellow, grey, pink, black, and white. A woman’s face is partially seen in the sky above a misty abstract landscape; a dragonfly flutters at the bottom. As if encircling a thought, overlaid near her face is a row of thin concentric yellow lines around an empty circular space, straightening imperceptibly towards the edges of the painting. Inspired by Beyonce. This painting is unframed with bright purple painted sides, the signature is on the back.
Sandra Cohen’s dreamlike painting and mixed media work explores the paradoxical nature she finds everywhere. Cohen layers a constantly shifting ground of memory with snippets of lyrics, invasive ‘earworms’, and the human tendency to create order from chaos. Music is intimately entwined with memory for Cohen, who has been a performing musician and songwriter. She also has a deep interest in science, especially the concepts of modern physics. Using techniques that vary from wet to dry and tight to loose, and processes that may weave between digital and tactile, the act of creating the work also reflects what she hopes emerges: glimpses of a true/false spectrum wavering into being as lustrous, rhythmic, and often darkly humorous hybrids.
