About the Item

"Fell into the Ocean" is a 16 x 16 x 1 inch abstract acrylic painting by Sandra Cohen. Dynamic, expressive brushstrokes in dominant cool oceanic tones of gray, white, blue, and hints of green, are contrasted with warm accents of yellow, ochre and lavender that radiate from the bottom right and fan out in a sunburst or explosion that cuts through the more fluid, swirling background of grays and blues. The painting is layered and textured with evident brush marks, blending, and translucent washes that give it depth and motion. Energetic and ethereal, this painting grew out of a dream, evoking a sense of movement and an immersive, introspective experience, like descending into the depths of water or consciousness. The sides are finished in white and this piece is ready to hang, with or without framing. It is signed on the back. Sandra Cohen’s dreamlike painting and mixed media work explores the paradoxical nature she finds everywhere. Cohen layers a constantly shifting ground of memory with snippets of lyrics, invasive ‘earworms’, and the human tendency to create order from chaos. Music is intimately entwined with memory for Cohen, who has been a performing musician and songwriter. She also has a deep interest in science, especially the concepts of modern physics. Using techniques that vary from wet to dry and tight to loose, and processes that may weave between digital and tactile, the act of creating the work also reflects what she hopes emerges: glimpses of a true/false spectrum wavering into being as lustrous, rhythmic, and often darkly humorous hybrids. Cohen is represented by Fountain Street Gallery based in Boston, MA.
