About the Item
“Johnny” is a 24 x 24 x 1 inch abstract acrylic painting on canvas by Sandra Cohen. In the background, yellow, green, gold, crimson, white, and pink are loosely painted, scraped and dripped, in places forming curves and patterns. Thin electric blue lines are overlaid, creating twisting and spiraling organic floral forms that grow across the bottom with the living energy of a garden. The sides are finished in white and this piece is ready to hang, with or without framing. It is signed on the back.
Sandra Cohen’s dreamlike painting and mixed media work explores the paradoxical nature she finds everywhere. Cohen layers a constantly shifting ground of memory with snippets of lyrics, invasive ‘earworms’, and the human tendency to create order from chaos. Music is intimately entwined with memory for Cohen, who has been a performing musician and songwriter. She also has a deep interest in science, especially the concepts of modern physics. Using techniques that vary from wet to dry and tight to loose, and processes that may weave between digital and tactile, the act of creating the work also reflects what she hopes emerges: glimpses of a true/false spectrum wavering into being as lustrous, rhythmic, and often darkly humorous hybrids.
