About the Item
"Kilroy" by Sandra Cohen, is a 30 x 30 x 1 inch acrylic painting on canvas in deep brown, cool grey and blue. A specific geometry seems to pulsate and repeat, emerging from the center. A woman stares out, in the negative space a bird is flying. The title references the graffiti of a departed soldier, "Kilroy was here." Close to a Black Hole and it's geometry, no light or sound signals can escape. An observer sees Time cease, the one within appears stopped, yet, from inside Time continues. From Earth, beyond the reach of the Black Hole's massive gravity, a sonic signal can be recieved: a B-flat 57 octaves beneath human hearing. When someone passes out of the known world they appear stopped in Time, but far enough away a signal may arrive that cannot be heard. The sides are finished in brown and this piece is ready to hang, with or without framing. It is signed on the back.
Sandra Cohen’s dreamlike painting and mixed media work explores the paradoxical nature she finds everywhere. Cohen layers a constantly shifting ground of memory with snippets of lyrics, invasive ‘earworms’, and the human tendency to create order from chaos. Music is intimately entwined with memory for Cohen, who has been a performing musician and songwriter. She also has a deep interest in science, especially the concepts of modern physics. Using techniques that vary from wet to dry and tight to loose, and processes that may weave between digital and tactile, the act of creating the work also reflects what she hopes emerges: glimpses of a true/false spectrum wavering into being as lustrous, rhythmic, and often darkly humorous hybrids. Cohen is represented by Fountain Street Gallery based in Boston, MA.
