Sandra Cohen's “the Ministry of Magical Thinking” is a 30 x 24 x 1.5 inch acrylic painting on canvas, in bold red, orange, blue, and yellow. A woman dances on the flares of a sun that has a tiny black singularity at its core. The figure and background are painted boldly and freely, while the golden stars and flares of the outer sun are fine, precise and geometric. This painting is unframed with red painted sides, the signature is on the back.
Sandra Cohen’s dreamlike painting and mixed media work explores the paradoxical nature she finds everywhere. Cohen layers a constantly shifting ground of memory with snippets of lyrics, invasive ‘earworms’, and the human tendency to create order from chaos. Music is intimately entwined with memory for Cohen, who has been a performing musician and songwriter. She also has a deep interest in science, especially the concepts of modern physics. Using techniques that vary from wet to dry and tight to loose, and processes that may weave between digital and tactile, the act of creating the work also reflects what she hopes emerges: glimpses of a true/false spectrum wavering into being as lustrous, rhythmic, and often darkly humorous hybrids.
