About the Item
"Regular John" by Sandra Cohen is a 36 x 24 inch acrylic painting with a haunting, ethereal quality, merging abstraction with subtle narrative elements. Hinting at themes of memory, distance, and loss, soft and atmospheric pale whites, icy blues, dusty pinks, and light purples form a dreamlike expanse. Delicate washes and blurred transitions give the sense of clouds or mist, suggesting fading or drifting away. In contrast, the upper left corner bursts with turbulent deep maroons, electric blue line work, and dark shadows, leading towards sketch-like red lines that arc and spiral across the canvas on the right side, like tangled threads of thought trailing small ghostly circles and square shapes. Near the bottom left quadrant and partially buried in the paint, soft, typewriter-style text appears. The faint reflection of a figure on the surface of still water can be seen in the misty central space. This work conjours absence more than presence—where forms float just out of reach, hinted at, unable to be defined. It is signed on the back.
Sandra Cohen’s dreamlike painting and mixed media work explores the paradoxical nature she finds everywhere. Cohen layers a constantly shifting ground of memory with snippets of lyrics, invasive ‘earworms’, and the human tendency to create order from chaos. Music is intimately entwined with memory for Cohen, who has been a performing musician and songwriter. She also has a deep interest in science, especially the concepts of modern physics. Using techniques that vary from wet to dry and tight to loose, and processes that may weave between digital and tactile, the act of creating the work also reflects what she hopes emerges: glimpses of a true/false spectrum wavering into being as lustrous, rhythmic, and often darkly humorous hybrids.
