About the Item
"Smiling" by Sandra Cohen is an 18 x 18 x 1 inch acrylic painting on canvas featuring mostly blue tones with areas of red, rust green, lavendar and ochre. Cartoonish smiling faces fall diagonally from the sky in a misty blue landscape towards a valley below. Bypassing scribbled teeth, hard edged red slashes, a white "x", and text that reads "practice makes perfect", the expressions become more manic and forced as they sink beneath a white cloud hovering over a rusty valley on the right, below an "x". This painting has sides finished in bright electric green and can be hung as is. It is signed on the back.
2016 was an excellent year to begin to practice Smiling, a process known to physically affect mood in positive ways. So many sad and frightening things were overwhelming me, so I tried it. I am still practicing.
Sandra Cohen’s dreamlike painting and mixed media work explores the paradoxical nature she finds everywhere. Cohen layers a constantly shifting ground of memory with snippets of lyrics, invasive ‘earworms’, and the human tendency to create order from chaos. Music is intimately entwined with memory for Cohen, who has been a performing musician and songwriter. She also has a deep interest in science, especially the concepts of modern physics. Using techniques that vary from wet to dry and tight to loose, and processes that may weave between digital and tactile, the act of creating the work also reflects what she hopes emerges: glimpses of a true/false spectrum wavering into being as lustrous, rhythmic, and often darkly humorous hybrids. Cohen is represented by Fountain Street Gallery based in Boston, MA.
