About the Item
"Solid Gold Toilet" is a 20 x 16 x 1 inch contemporary acrylic painting on cradled wood by Sandra Cohen. At the top, coloring the sky, warm hues of pinks, peach, and oranges blend with cooler shades of bright blue and hints of black and white. The upper corners contain black, cloudy, storm-like smudges, hinting at gathering turmoil. Further down, as the colors turn to fiery oranges and reds the agitation is clear. The brushwork is expressive and layered, with areas of smooth blending as well as rough, erratic scribbles and dabs, adding dynamic energy. At the center, a symmetrical starburst surrounded by small blue dots and intersected by faint lines, draws attention and radiates as a 'sun king' weilding power. This central symbol streams downward towards the White House dome, where two dark blue banner shapes bear the text “VERY FINE”, a reference to Donald Trump's description of the insurrectionists violently storming the Capitol. Near the bottom right, a hippie-like flower doodle stands alone in naive complacency.
This painting was made in a stunned rage on the day after the January 2021 political attack on the Capitol. The sides are finished in white and it is ready to hang, with or without frame. It is signed on the back.
Sandra Cohen’s dreamlike painting and mixed media work explores the paradoxical nature she finds everywhere. Cohen layers a constantly shifting ground of memory with snippets of lyrics, invasive ‘earworms’, and the human tendency to create order from chaos. Music is intimately entwined with memory for Cohen, who has been a performing musician and songwriter. She also has a deep interest in science, especially the concepts of modern physics. Using techniques that vary from wet to dry and tight to loose, and processes that may weave between digital and tactile, the act of creating the work also reflects what she hopes emerges: glimpses of a true/false spectrum wavering into being as lustrous, rhythmic, and often darkly humorous hybrids.
