Sandra Cohen's “Squirrel” is a 12 x 12 x 1 inch abstract painting on canvas, mounted on cradled wood. Varied brushed and pooling bright yellow, gold, and cream form the background. Areas of loosely painted deep turquoise, ochre and white conjour the figure of a little squirrel. Red scrawls and bits of letters float in bursts of truncated language. This painting is unframed and ready to hang; the sides are finished in vibrant deep turquoise, and it is signed on the back.
Sandra Cohen’s dreamlike painting and mixed media work explores the paradoxical nature she finds everywhere. Cohen layers a constantly shifting ground of memory with snippets of lyrics, invasive ‘earworms’, and the human tendency to create order from chaos. Music is intimately entwined with memory for Cohen, who has been a performing musician and songwriter. She also has a deep interest in science, especially the concepts of modern physics. Using techniques that vary from wet to dry and tight to loose, and processes that may weave between digital and tactile, the act of creating the work also reflects what she hopes emerges: glimpses of a true/false spectrum wavering into being as lustrous, rhythmic, and often darkly humorous hybrids.
