Sandra Cohen’s “Thunderhead” is a 24 x 24 x 1 inch acrylic painting on cradled wood, loosely painted in colors of pink, brown, blue, and green. At the top, a dense and chaotic storm cloud gathers in the center of the sky over a landscape of houses, reaching down to break over the central house filled with a person looking out. This painting is unframed with white painted sides, with the signature on the back.
Sandra Cohen’s dreamlike painting and mixed media work explores the paradoxical nature she finds everywhere. Cohen layers a constantly shifting ground of memory with snippets of lyrics, invasive ‘earworms’, and the human tendency to create order from chaos. Music is intimately entwined with memory for Cohen, who has been a performing musician and songwriter. She also has a deep interest in science, especially the concepts of modern physics. Using techniques that vary from wet to dry and tight to loose, and processes that may weave between digital and tactile, the act of creating the work also reflects what she hopes emerges: glimpses of a true/false spectrum wavering into being as lustrous, rhythmic, and often darkly humorous hybrids.
