Sandra Cohen’s “water bearer” is an 18 x 9 x 2 inch abstract diptych consisting of two 9 x 9 x 2 inch acrylic paintings on canvas, in steel blue, red, orange, gold, pink and black. The top canvas has a roughly painted steely blue background behind boldly painted oval and round shapes and marks of varied size and transparency. The shapes recall biological or natural elements viewed at microscopic perspective; clinging together, reacting, dispersing and flowing toward the bottom canvas, these forms come to rest, where the colors saturate and appear vibrant over the (hot and thirsty) bright red textured background. This piece can be hung in different configurations (it was painted in various orientations) — the canvases can be slightly separated, switched in position, or even hung horizontally; as shown here, the background appears as air over water. This piece is chunky in ratio, comparatively deep at 2 inches. It is unframed with painted sides, and each canvas is signed on the back.
Sandra Cohen’s dreamlike painting and mixed media work explores the paradoxical nature she finds everywhere. Cohen layers a constantly shifting ground of memory with snippets of lyrics, invasive ‘earworms’, and the human tendency to create order from chaos. Music is intimately entwined with memory for Cohen, who has been a performing musician and songwriter. She also has a deep interest in science, especially the concepts of modern physics. Using techniques that vary from wet to dry and tight to loose, and processes that may weave between digital and tactile, the act of creating the work also reflects what she hopes emerges: glimpses of a true/false spectrum wavering into being as lustrous, rhythmic, and often darkly humorous hybrids.
