About the Item
"We move like we are suspended in Amber" is a 20 x 16 x .25 inch acrylic painting by Sandra Cohen. A richly atmospheric, abstracted landscape that evokes the feeling of a vivid, otherworldly horizon or a surreal memory-scape. It is divided horizontally into broad bands of color that transition smoothly from deep, moody crimson at the top, through amber and blush tones in the center, to cool teal and earthy browns at the bottom. The top section, weighted and saturated with the reds, maroons, and violets, resembles a turbulent sky at sunset or the molten surface of a gas giant planet. The middle band, in creamy yellows and soft pinks, creates a glowing, almost ethereal light that feels suspended between sky and land. The bottom portion introduces grounding textures with gestural strokes in turquoise, olive, and umber, suggesting vegetation or a forest floor viewed through mist. Small, deliberate black squares march horizontally across the lower third of the canvas—like code, or fragmented text—introducing a rhythmic, purposeful presence that contrasts with the fluid natural forms. Inspired by a Camper Van Beethoven lyric, this painting would be beautiful hung invisibly offset from the wall or traditionally framed. It is signed on the back.
Sandra Cohen’s dreamlike painting and mixed media work explores the paradoxical nature she finds everywhere. Cohen layers a constantly shifting ground of memory with snippets of lyrics, invasive ‘earworms’, and the human tendency to create order from chaos. Music is intimately entwined with memory for Cohen, who has been a performing musician and songwriter. She also has a deep interest in science, especially the concepts of modern physics. Using techniques that vary from wet to dry and tight to loose, and processes that may weave between digital and tactile, the act of creating the work also reflects what she hopes emerges: glimpses of a true/false spectrum wavering into being as lustrous, rhythmic, and often darkly humorous hybrids.
