Mid Century still life oil painting on canvas, signed in the bottom right Adeline Hugonnard (1906-1987). A richly textured still life of figs and grapes with an abundance of swirling brush strokes to give an animated and textured to the touch. A seasonal composition of deep blues and reds sit upon a light and contrasting cloth. The central anchor of the composition are the bunches of grapes in a myriad of green and blue black tones, but the stars are the richly accentuated figs, painted with a blend of realism and impressionistic vitality, their ripeness is almost palpable.

Signed: Adeline Sophie Rosalie Hugonnard (1906-1987) was a French painter known for her delicate and vibrant floral compositions. Born in Saint-Étienne on May 28, 1906, she suffered from a congenital malformation of the larynx that left her deaf and mute from birth. This disability inevitably shaped her life and limited public recognition of her artistic work during her lifetime. Demonstrating a natural talent for painting from a young age, Hugonnard trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Saint-Étienne, where she developed a rigorous and independent approach to her practice. At only 19, in 1925, she exhibited for the first time with five paintings presented at the Salon of the Société des Arts du Forez. Her characteristic style is defined by a subtly undulating brushstrokes that lend rhythm and vitality to her floral subjects. After her father's death in 1940, Adeline lived with her mother until her death. She then moved into a retirement home in Chauffailles, where the management, recognizing her dedication, provided her with a small studio to continue working. She continued to paint extensively there, sometimes on unusual surfaces such as fabric linings, household textiles, and even dishcloths. Upon her death on October 1, 1987, without descendants, she bequeathed the rest of her works and the furniture from her studio to the town of Chauffailles. Today, her legacy lives on in public collections: two of her paintings are kept at the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Saint-Étienne Métropole, one at the National Center for Visual Arts (CNAP), and several others are kept at the Museum of the City of Chauffailles, located in the Château de Chauffailles.
