About the Item
'Still Life with White Pitcher and Fruit', oil on board, by Anna Costa (circa 1960s). In addition to her many landscapes, Costa painted many still lifes, mostly bouquets of flowers as subject. This lovely composition consists of a white pitcher with the darker vinegar holder, accompanied by sweet, autumnal persimmon fruit, all uniting atop the vibrant yellow backdrop of the table cloth. Still life paintings often bring the outdoors inside and with them, thoughts of nature, of hope and beauty. A beautifully composed still life such as this may inspire one to action and to the realisation of how beautiful life can be. What an inspiring artwork painted by this wonderful Provencal artist in her inimitable Impressionist style! Overall, the quality of light in Provence is one of the region's most distinctive features, and it has played a significant role in shaping the cultural and artistic identity of the area. The colours in Costa's artworks are famous for their richness and vibrancy, and the quality of light in the region plays a big part in this. Please enjoy the many photos accompanying the listing. It is in good overall condition and has been newly framed with a French-style linen slip. Upon request a video will be provided. Although unsigned, the stamp of the Atelier Anna Costa appears on the backside of her works.
About the Artist: Anna Costa (approx: 1922-2022) painted in her Provençal village in the Cavaillon area from the 1940s until the 1970s. Upon her passing, her estate released her art into the market where dealers around the world are clambering for her works. Costa's art is characterised by its bright colours and strong naive style which make them instantly recognisable. This style is called Provençal Colourism. It is a regional art movement that emerged in the South of France in the early 20th century. It is also characterised by bright and bold colours, as well as strong contrasts between light and shadow. The movement drew inspiration from the natural beauty of the region including its landscapes, people and traditions.

'Still Life with Pitcher', oil on paper, by Charles Réal (circa 1950s). Still-lifes make voyeurs out of all of us. No matter the era to which they belong, they always give us the sense that we’re spying on a table set for a night of gluttony or perhaps, romance. Whatever is set on the still-life table can transport us to another place limited only by our imaginations. What is not well known is that those tabletop items often had coded meanings. The secret meanings behind the paintings and their unofficial language spawned several sub-genres, including floral still life, breakfast paintings...
