"White Roses in a Vase" by American Impressionist Anna S. Fisher (1873-1942) is oil on canvas, measures 16 x 12 inches, and is signed at the lower left. The work is appropriately framed and ready to hang. Anna S. Fisher was born in 1873 in Ohio, New York. She was the youngest of 6 children born to Rachel and John Fisher, a farmer. Fisher attended the Fairfield Academy in Fairfield, New York before studying at Brooklyn’s Pratt Institute.[1] In 1900, several years after graduating from Pratt, Fisher joined the faculty as an instructor in watercolor.[2] She went on to become one of the school’s most distinguished teachers. In 1909, Fisher exhibited at the Pratt Institute with fellow artist Adelaide Deming. A critic for the Standard Union said that her work reveals evidence of her studies abroad. Her realistic floral studies were, “strengthened by… the lustre of the vase in each study which brings out the color of the flowers and add to the color note.”[3] In 1910, Fisher exhibited 25 landscape works at the Powell Gallery in Manhattan. Her subject matter included Brooklyn’s Prospect Park and scenes from her travels in England. The critic for the Brooklyn Daily Eagle noted the artist’s distinction in the watercolor medium.[4] In 1919, Fisher won the National Arts Club prize at the exhibition of the National Association of Women Painters and Sculptors. In 1923, she exhibited with “eminent women painters” including Cecilia Beaux, Mary Cassatt, Lydia Field Emmet, Martha Walter and Violet Oakley at Philadelphia’s Plastic Club. By 1926, Fisher had become an associate member of the National Academy of Design. Her work was included in the Academy’s centennial exhibition and her painting entitled The Orange Bowl was part of the Academy’s permanent collection.[5] During the summer months when Fisher wasn’t teaching, she spent time painting in England, Italy, and France or in Gloucester, Massachusetts where she captured industrial scenes and men at work near the railway dock. In 1923, she spent the summer in Oyster Bay at the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation painting landscapes and garden scenes.[6] During her lifetime, Fisher exhibited widely including at the New York Watercolor Club, the Philadelphia Watercolor Club, the Pennsylvania Academy and the National Academy of Design.. Fisher was elected a full academician at the National Academy of Design in 1932 and also held memberships with the New York Watercolor Society and the Woman Painters and Sculptors Society.[7] Fisher retired from her position at the Pratt Institute after a four-decade tenure. Following her death in 1942, a memorial exhibition was held in the gallery at Pratt. Many of Fisher’s works were borrowed for the exhibit from notable institutions including the National Academy of Design, the National Arts Club, and the Montclair Art Museum.
