About the Item
Betsy Podlach (American, born 1964.)
Still life with Fruit, a Bowl of Apples
Framed 25 X 26 24 X 25 inches
Betsy Podlach graduated from Harvard, cum laude, (she studied at Harvard with Alfred Decreido and William Reimann as well as Carlos Fuentes continuing her studies at the New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting, and Sculpture, Ms. Podlach was awarded an art fellowship and residency at The International School of Art in Umbria, Italy.
Betsy Podlach is an American painter who considers the Italian Venetians and the american abstract expressionist painters her mentors. The two painters she is most inspired by are Titian and Jackson Pollock, Both use the picture plane and abstraction and space, light, movement and form to communicate a physicality built entirely on the principals of painting, in the “classical” sense of a flat plane and lines, color, shape, space and light applied to that flat surface to create magic – light, space, form, emotion, force, movement, the physical and the spiritual. She describes her work as a figurative version of abstract expressionism. She was influenced by many of the abstract expressionists from the NY school in the 1950s, she studied with Nicolas Carone and Mercedes Matte as well as others influenced by Hans Hoffman. She spent many years painting in Italy. She went back and forth between the figure and “pure” abstraction, the landscape and “pure” abstraction. Nicholas Carone did so, in a way that incorporated the essence in a contemporary way of the great Italian masters. Willem De Kooning did this with his landscapes and his women. Jackson Pollock did this with his heads, animals and his more “pure” symphonic landscape abstractions.
Other artists who were her biggest influences are Pierre Bonnard, Henri Matisse, Paul Cezanne, Georges Rouault and Claude Monet. For 8 years Betsy lived and painted in Paris, France. She spent time in Munich, Germany and was also influenced by German painters from the early 1900s, pre WWI, the Blue Rider group, including Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc. Influenced by contemporary life, fashion, design, nature, animals, the news, the feelings, the experiences, the goings on, as well as contemporary art are all amongst the influences on her art. “I grew up around beautiful fabrics, thanks to my mother who was an avid seamstress, and am intrigued by the high fashion designers like Christian Dior and Chanel, whom she became familiar with when she lived in Paris. I love to add hints of their fine fabrics and fashions in my paintings to enhance the stories my work suggests.” Podlach’s work is in public and private collections all over the world, including that the Italian design house Marni, who beyond purchasing a painting, also used her images in some of their runway designs for Spring 2019, Pfizer Inc, and NYU, and Princess Donatella Borghese of Rome, Italy, as well as used for the book covers of published poetry and psychology books.

Betsy Podlach
Betsy Podlach was born in New York in 1964. She studied painting while earning her BA at Harvard University with William Reiman and Alfred Decredico, as well as literature and fiction writing with Carlos Fuentes and the playwright William Alfred. She then attended the New York Studio School in New York, NY. At the Studio School, she studied with members of the New York School of Abstract Expressionism who had studied with Hons Hoffman, Nicolas Carone, Mercedes Matter, and Ofra Shemish. Podlach paints landscapes, still-lifes, and figures. Her primary focus is on figurative images, nudes, couples, and portraits of women and sometimes men, with and without an imagined animal or several animals. These are created through a process of trying to create a person who didn’t exist before, who comes into existence for the first time as the painting develops in a dialogue with the emerging subjects. These women, men, animals, and imaginary settings are both intense in their imagined past and future and in their presence depicted as a moment in time, a moment in which time is stopped - vulnerable, sexual, strong, and engaged in the fullness of life, love, pain, and joy. Podlach has exhibited extensively in both the US and Europe. Her work is in both public and private collections all over the world, including that of Pfizer Inc, and NYU. She seeks to combine the elements of the great Venetian painter, Titan, and the expressionism of Jackson Pollock into a contemporary aesthetic of physicality, sexuality, intimacy, and mystery. She has studied, lived, and painted independently in Italy, Paris, and Provence thanks to grants, scholarships, and the generosity of Donatella Borghese and Nicolas Carone. She resided in New York City for many years and now lives and works on Eastern Long Island, near Southampton New York.

"1940 - A Study of Apples" Original Acrylic on Canvas by Tom Perkinson, Framed
By Tom Perkinson
Located in Encino, CA
"1940 - A Study of Apples" is an original acrylic painting on canvas by Tom Perkinson. His use of saturated violets, vivid yellows, and resplendent oranges pushes color to almost-otherworldly realms. Perkinson describes his style of painting as "Romantic Realism," a technique that incorporates two iconic art movements. This style, in combination with the imagination of the artist, produces remarkable results, showcasing Perkinson's keen ability to capture emotion, nature, and life - all in a brushstroke. Both his technical talent and choice of subject matter pair perfectly with its original carved, custom, gilt frame. This masterful work would make a great addition to an art collection and enhance most any home, perfect for those who have an affinity for still lifes, fruit-themed art, impressionism, romanticism, realism, plein-air painting, apples, and nature.
In the artist’s own words:
“My color combinations aren’t in the realm of the natural world, because I don’t paint reality; I’m a painter of fiction. I try to paint a sense of place, as though this scene really does exist. I have had my collectors ask me where this scene is, and I just have to point to my head and say I made it up. Thus, I think of my work as romantic realism. I’m painting a certain reality that I’ve invented, inspired by the fascinatingly rich Southwestern landscape.”
“Color gets all the credit, but it’s the values that do all the work. I don’t begin with sketches, because I want to be free to follow the painting in any direction. I start with washes of different values and tints. Then, I begin to look for a landscape. Several directions will appear to me at this time, and then I have to decide on one of them. During these first few moments, I must establish my distance from the scene. Am I a mile away or just across the river? This is one of the first steps, and I have to decide before I can continue. It’s important for working out the perspective and how things are going to relate to one another in the picture. Then, as the landscape evolves, I look for more images to add to the composition.”

About the Artist: Tom Perkinson, born in Indiana in 1940, has become distinguished as a regional painter, known for his work grounded in the visually dramatic landscape of the Southwest.
As a child, Perkinson discovered he had a love for the natural landscape, and a talent for art. He fostered that talent through classes at the John Herron Institute of Art in Indianapolis, and then at the Chicago Art Academy upon graduating from high school.
He received a degree in art from Oklahoma Baptist University in 1964, before moving on to graduate school at the University of New Mexico. Here, among noted works of a larger scale, he continued to paint the landscape, and it was this work that began to reflect a new fascination with the Southwest. He had found what would become an infinite source of inspiration.
