Charles Buckley’s (b. 1966) progression paintings on multiple canvases are an investigation of the construction of narrative and progress. Rendered in bright colors and evocative of a classic Pop Art style, Buckley draws inspiration for his figures and objects from mid-20th century manuals and textbooks. The progression paintings are, in part, an investigation of narrative. They’re based on the linear and arbitrary, yet essential nature of “beginning/middle/end” storytelling. In this way they are also about notions of progress.

Charles Buckley
For Charles Buckley, painting as a practice is a means of engaging with the world and investigating preconceived notions. His progression paintings are rendered on multiple canvases and are an investigation of the construction of narrative and progress. Buckley’s work often deals with “leakage,” which he describes as “the area where things cannot be explained rationally, yet fit within the logic of the painting and seem to be known.” Charles Buckley received an MFA at Hunter College in New York and a BFA in painting at the California College Of Arts in Oakland, California.
