About the Item

'Potted Flowers', oil on canvas, by Charles Kvapil (1933). Potted red geraniums symbolise happiness, good health, good wishes, and friendship. They are associated with positive emotions. The artist paints the flowers bathed in radiant light sitting on a ledge, perhaps at the entrance to a home providing a delightful welcome to visitors. The sizeable painting is in good overall condition and is newly framed with a French-style linen slip. It has recently undergone a thorough cleaning and preservation by an art restoration specialist. It is signed by the artist in the lower left hand (and on the reverse along with an address near Montmartre, 11 Avenue Junot in Paris' 18th Arrondissement), dated 1933. Please enjoy the many photos which accompany this listing. Upon request a video may be provided. About the Artist: Charles Kvapil was born in 1884 in Antwerp, Belgium, of Czech origin. He exhibited his first works there in 1908 at the Salon d'Anvers. After the war he attended l'Académie des Beaux-Arts in Antwerp and began to exhibit in Paris in 1920 at the Salon des Indépendants. Kvapil was known primarily as a painter of people, in particular of curvaceous nudes. He moved into a studio in Montmartre where he painted his models in the studio with Sacre Coeur as backdrop. He also painted in the countryside like the Impressionists. Kvapil's paintings are creative and modern; his nudes and bouquets of flowers are energetic and powerful. His palette is rich in cobalt blues and in fiery earth tones. His technique is intuitive and confident. Although his oils were often modestly presented on panels of wood or soft board, those formats did not detract from the evident talent he displayed nor from the joy exemplified in his paintings. His paintings are vigorously sought after when they become available at the international auction houses. He is now represented in many public and private collections including the Museum of Modern Art in Paris, in the museums of Le Havre, Rouen, Saint-Etienne, Amsterdam and Tunis. He exhibited in his lifetime in Paris, Munich, Brussels, Geneva, Rome, in Stockholm, London and New York. 'Bouquet de Fleurs', oil on board, by Louis Toncini (1982). Painted towards the end of his career, this piece belongs to that part of his body of work which was lighthearted, optimistic and pleasing. It is signed by the artist in the lower left hand. Upon request, a short video of this piece may be provided. (NB - On the reverse of this painting is another called 'Landscape in Saint Clément on the Durance' which is currently covered by the backing board. Image with accompanying photos to this listing. About the Artist: Louis Toncini (1907-2002), born in Marseille, France and was one of a group of artists who founded the 'peintres prolétariens', or later, the painters of the people. Still Life with Pitcher
Located in London, GB
'Still Life with Pitcher', oil on paper, by Charles Réal (circa 1950s). Still-lifes make voyeurs out of all of us. No matter the era to which they belong, they always give us the sense that we’re spying on a table set for a night of gluttony or perhaps, romance. Whatever is set on the still-life table can transport us to another place limited only by our imaginations. What is not well known is that those tabletop items often had coded meanings. The secret meanings behind the paintings and their unofficial language spawned several sub-genres, including floral still life, breakfast paintings...
