Chattanooga-based artist Christina Renfer Vogel’s “Turning Towards the Sun” features paintings that reflect an intentional turn towards beauty in the face of the tension
uncertainty of recent years. Through nourishing periods of focused observation, she has allowed herself to delight in jubilant color, playful pattern

stretch towards sunlight in the space of a painting session.
“Bringing plants
flowers into my studio to serve as subjects -
companion - has been a kind of celebration of vibrant life
fleeting pleasure,” says Christina. “Working from direct observation requires close looking,
my attention has been rewarded with quiet stirrings. These works are small luxuries, defiant acts of care
gestures of hope."
Christina holds an MFA from the Massachusetts College of Art and a BFA from Temple University’s Tyler School of Art. Christina has participated in Artist residencies including the JSS in Civita program (Civita Castellana, Italy), the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts
the Vermont Studio Center. She is a recipient of a Lighton International Artists Exchange Program grant
an Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation grant, among other awards. Christina currently serves as an associate professor of painting and drawing at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
