Large scale mid 20th Century French, oil on board, still life, tablescape, interior view, by Claude Barthélémy. Signed bottom left, presented in fine carved wood and gilt frame, with linen insert.
A strong and colourful composition of a collection of household objects on a fine white tablecloth. Great use of light and shade, the objects are very real and present, one could almost reach in to the painting and pick them up. The addition of the old fashioned flat iron adds a touch of humour to an an otherwise more normal collection of dining table objects.
Barthélémy shows a masterful understanding of colour and form and has created a very accomplished and powerful painting.
This type of still life painting has a long and noble history. The term “Still Life” was officially used to name a genre around the late 16th and 17th Century in the Netherlands. It is translated from the Dutch word stilleven. In French, the term for Still Life is nature morte, which means “dead nature”. In Italian, it translates to natura morta, which also means “dead nature”.
