As a young man Claude-Émile Schuffenecker was a pupil of Grellet, Paul Baudry and Carolus-Duran, but he did not immediately follow up his artistic vocation. Working in a stockbroker's to make a living, he met Gaugin, who was in exactly the same situation. They both abandoned security for the artistic adventure and remained friends, though a modest inheritance enabled Schuffenecker to begin a small collection of works of art. In 1883 he gained a licence to teach art in schools and colleges and went to work at the lycée of Vannes. He gave up teaching in 1914. In 1883 he attended the Académie Colarossi, and he met Manet, Pissarro and Mallarmé. In 1886 he introduced Émile Bernard to his friend Gaugin, a meeting that led to `cloisonnism' and the dispute about primacy that arose from it. He joined Gaugin again near Pont-Aven, Brittany, and in 1887 stayed in Étretat and Yport, where he lodged Gaugin and entertained Van Gogh. About 1892 he joined the Rose + Cross ( Rose + Croix) movement and collaborated with Émile Bernard on the esoteric review Le Coeur (). In 1893 he joined Madame Blavatsky's theosophical movement.
He exhibited for the first time at the Salon des Artistes Français of 1877, then in 1884 at the Salon des Indépendants, of which he was a co-founder. In 1886 he exhibited at the 8th and last exhibition of the Impressionists and in 1888 with Gaugin at the `synthesist' exhibition organised by Theo van Gogh at Boussaud et Valadon. In 1889 he organised an exhibition of works by Gaugin, Émile Bernard, Anquetin, Louis Roy and himself at the Café Volponi. In 1891 he exhibited at the first exhibition of Impressionist and Symbolist Painters ( Peintres impressionistes et symbolistes) at Le Barc, Boutteville, and in 1900, with Émile Bernard, at the first exhibition of the Esoteric Group. He was represented in 1934 in Gaugin and his Friends, the Pont-Aven School and the Académie Julian ( Gaugin et ses amis, l'École de Pont-Aven et l'Académie Julian).
The only solo show he held took place at the Librairie de l'Art Indépendant d'Edmond Bailly in 1896. A retrospective was organised jointly by the Musée Departmental and the Museum of Pont-Aven in 1996, and this went also to the Museum of St-Germain-en-Laye.
Schuffenecker was well informed about the state of knowledge in his own time. He was a scholarly man and his letters show he had a gift for writing. His company was much sought after. Although he started to paint in an entirely classical style, he joined the Impressionists, or, rather, the Neo-Impressionists. His clear head and bold spirit led him to adopt their essential principles, which he put to work in landscapes and seascapes, almost always of Brittany, and in infrequent portraits. His painting Hymn to the Sun is often referred to. From 1890 to 1896 he painted what can rightly be called Symbolist pictures. Regretting the fate of an artist who seemed destined for high renown, André Salmon wrote, `Was it not the drudgery that paralysed him? He earned his living and wasted his time teaching school kids to draw from plaster models; it is said that he spoke to them in the same way you would to college students you wanted to discourage from entering for the Prix de Rome'.

View AllPommes et raisins - Impressionist Still Life Oil Painting by Jeanne Baudot
Located in Marlow, Buckinghamshire
Signed impressionist oil on canvas still life by French painter Jeanne Baudot. The work depicts a bowl filled with red and green apples and grapes.
Signature:
Signed upper left
Dimensions:
Framed: 33"x29"
Unframed: 26"x22"
Provenance:
By direct descent from Jeanne Baudot to her godson Jean Griot
Jeanne Baudot's father, Emile, was doctor to French artist Auguste Renoir's relatives when they lived in Louveciennes.
In 1893, she met Auguste Renoir through her cousin Paul Gallimard, an art collector. Renoir travelled from his studio in Montmartre to meet the aspiring painter and give his opinion on her work. Renoir was so impressed with what he saw that soon she became his only pupil.
Form 1897 to 1914, she lived at 4, Rue du Général Leclerc in Louveciennes, where Renoir had his workshop.
She became the godmother of Auguste Renoir's second son, Jean Renoir, at the Saint-Pierre de Montmartre church, while Georges Durand-Ruel was the godfather. Throughout her life she stayed close to Jean Renoir, who became a film director. He wrote the preface of the exhibition catalogue of her retrospective in 1960 at Galerie Durand-Ruel.
Auguste Renoir painted several portraits of Jeanne Baudot. They became great friends, accomplices and confidants. They painted side by side, in the studio of the painter, in the studio of Jeanne and outside, in the countryside, in Louveciennes, in the South and elsewhere, chatting cheerfully. He gave her advice, and shared his own concerns, such as those caused by his talks with the representatives of the State to make them accept the paintings bequeathed by Gustave Caillebotte.
Maurice Denis painted Auguste Renoir and Miss Jeanne Baudot in 1906.
Jeanne Baudot was a childhood friend of painter Julie Manet, the daughter of Berthe Morisot and Eugène Manet, and appears in many instances of Manet's diary.
Her name was given to a street in Louveciennes.

"1940 - A Study of Apples" Original Acrylic on Canvas by Tom Perkinson, Framed
By Tom Perkinson
Located in Encino, CA
"1940 - A Study of Apples" is an original acrylic painting on canvas by Tom Perkinson. His use of saturated violets, vivid yellows, and resplendent oranges pushes color to almost-otherworldly realms. Perkinson describes his style of painting as "Romantic Realism," a technique that incorporates two iconic art movements. This style, in combination with the imagination of the artist, produces remarkable results, showcasing Perkinson's keen ability to capture emotion, nature, and life - all in a brushstroke. Both his technical talent and choice of subject matter pair perfectly with its original carved, custom, gilt frame. This masterful work would make a great addition to an art collection and enhance most any home, perfect for those who have an affinity for still lifes, fruit-themed art, impressionism, romanticism, realism, plein-air painting, apples, and nature.
In the artist’s own words:
“My color combinations aren’t in the realm of the natural world, because I don’t paint reality; I’m a painter of fiction. I try to paint a sense of place, as though this scene really does exist. I have had my collectors ask me where this scene is, and I just have to point to my head and say I made it up. Thus, I think of my work as romantic realism. I’m painting a certain reality that I’ve invented, inspired by the fascinatingly rich Southwestern landscape.”
“Color gets all the credit, but it’s the values that do all the work. I don’t begin with sketches, because I want to be free to follow the painting in any direction. I start with washes of different values and tints. Then, I begin to look for a landscape. Several directions will appear to me at this time, and then I have to decide on one of them. During these first few moments, I must establish my distance from the scene. Am I a mile away or just across the river? This is one of the first steps, and I have to decide before I can continue. It’s important for working out the perspective and how things are going to relate to one another in the picture. Then, as the landscape evolves, I look for more images to add to the composition.”

About the Artist: Tom Perkinson, born in Indiana in 1940, has become distinguished as a regional painter, known for his work grounded in the visually dramatic landscape of the Southwest.
As a child, Perkinson discovered he had a love for the natural landscape, and a talent for art. He fostered that talent through classes at the John Herron Institute of Art in Indianapolis, and then at the Chicago Art Academy upon graduating from high school.
He received a degree in art from Oklahoma Baptist University in 1964, before moving on to graduate school at the University of New Mexico. Here, among noted works of a larger scale, he continued to paint the landscape, and it was this work that began to reflect a new fascination with the Southwest. He had found what would become an infinite source of inspiration.
