Trompe l'oeil oil on canvas, measures 28" x 28" including frame. DEBORAH SAPIENZA I have always been attracted to the beauty and quality of Native American Indian objects of art. For the past 35 years I have been a collector/dealer of vintage Navajo, Zuni, and Hopi jewelry, Southwest pottery, baskets and weavings, Plains and Eastern beadwork. I am not limited to, but most of the subjects that I have painted are Native American Indian related. I love the colors, textures, geometric patterns and design. There is a strong spirit about each piece which I portray in my work. I have found that oil painting utilizing glazes and or dry brush suits my style of Trompe l’oeil/ realism best. BOIGRAPHY Since 1976 Deborah Sapienza has been involved with the arts in some fashion or another. She received an Associate Degree in Art and Advertising Technology with independent studies in Oil Painting Restoration in 1978. Shortly after receiving her degree, she was employed at a prestigious Advertising Agency in Rochester, NY while pursuing her love of painting. There was an “On MY OWN Time” show held at the agency each year for non-professional artists in which she won an award 2 years in a row. The paintings were then entered in a city wide competition in which she won top honors in oil painting. At this point she left the agency to dedicate more time to painting and painting restoration. Between 1983 and 1994 Deborah was very active in the art world. She exhibited in shows, sold most of her paintings and won numerous awards. From 1984 to 2005 she was a member of the Rochester Art Club and President from 1989 to 1991. She was active in the California based organization, WAOAW (Women Artists of the American West) from 1989 to 1993 and was Advertising Director from 1991 to 1993. From 1994 to 2005 family circumstances made it difficult for her to create very many of her own detailed paintings but she continued with Antique oil painting restoration and selling Native arts. For the past eight years she has been a teacher, mentor, and art advocate for her nephew, Richard Masters who was injured in a car accident in 1994. He was paralyzed from the neck down. Painting together as a team has been a wonderful collaboration and given him a purpose. Deborah mixes the paint, holds the canvas and Richard paints with his mouth. He is a member (with scholarship) of the international Mouth Foot Painting Artists (MFPA). Deborah’s most recent painting entitled, “”Vintage Navajo” is a fine example of Trompe l’oeil (trick of the eye) style. It is of a circa 1920 Navajo Germantown Sampler weaving and Navajo Squash Blossom Necklace woven with layers of paint to create an illusion of woven fabric and a silver necklace hanging on the wall.
