About the Item

Dorothea Sharp (British, 1873–1955) Lilies, Dahlias and Other Summer Blooms in a Jug Oil on board Signed ‘DOROTHEA SHARP’ (lower left) 24 1/8 x 18 1/4 in. (61.3 x 46.5 cm) This beautiful still life by Dorothea Sharp showcases her celebrated command of colour and texture. A lush arrangement of lilies, dahlias, and summer flowers fills a simple jug, their earthy hues set against a softly toned background. Sharp’s brushwork captures both freshness and immediacy, imbuing the composition with an impressionistic vitality that characterises her best work. Dorothea Sharp trained at the Regent Street Polytechnic and quickly established herself as a leading figure in early 20th-century British painting. She was elected a member of the Royal Society of British Artists and became Vice President of the Society of Women Artists, championing the role of women in the arts at a time when opportunities were limited. Sharp exhibited widely at the Royal Academy, the New English Art Club, and the Royal Society of Oil Painters, earning praise for her mastery of floral still lifes and sunlit scenes of everyday life. Influenced by Impressionism, Sharp often painted en plein air and was admired for her ability to translate natural light into luminous, colour-rich canvases. Her flower paintings, such as the present work, demonstrate both her technical skill and her sensitivity to the beauty of ordinary domestic subjects. Today, Sharp’s paintings are prized for their timeless charm and their place within the wider story of British Impressionism.
