A brilliantly executed and characterful surrealist still life composition, executed in tempera on board in 1965 by the established Swedish artist Eric Cederberg (1897-1984), whose artworks have been represented in several public and museum collections across Sweden.
Small yet impactful in its composition, the painting presents a carefully arranged tabletop composition featuring a glass vase adorned with delicate white floral patterns, a collection of green pears—some resting on a blue dish and others scattered on the wooden surface—and a gracefully curved branch with a golden autumn leaf. The background includes an arched doorway leading to a softly lit room, with a checkered floor adding a geometric contrast to the organic shapes of the fruit and vase.
Inviting viewers to revel in the simple beauty of everyday objects, the artist masterfully captures the essence of surrealism and realism through his meticulous brushwork and keen attention to detail, as well as by simplifying the objects into bold, flat shapes.
The colour palette is rich, and the artist has skilfully used subtle gradations of tone to suggest volume, particularly in the glass vase and pears.

This tempera on board is housed in a complementary gilt frame with an inner linen border. The painting is in excellent vintage condition. The frame has water marks and wear across its inner border, and has some light scuffing present as well.

Eric Cederberg
Eric Cederberg represents a subtle but no less significant strand of Nordic Surrealism. Working in the postwar period, he developed a Surrealist approach influenced by Magritte— calm, lucid, and rich in visual paradox. His paintings reveal a poetic logic at once restrained and unsettling, emblematic of a “smooth Surrealism” unique to the North.
