This very fine still life painting is by the French artist Eugène Boudin. Boudin, who was celebrated in his own day, is known today for his scenes of French coastal resorts and his impressionistic still lives. The present painting is an especially fine example of Boudin’s work. The painting depicts a still life of fruit and flowers, with a basket of apples perched atop a stone ledge, and the remainder of the foreground littered with fallen flowers and petals. The painterly manner is fluid and impressionistic, as expected of Boudin, who spent much of his time in the 1860s and 1870s in the company of Impressionists such as Monet.
The painting is signed lower right and is contained within a carved giltwood frame.
