About the Item

Impressive pair of large 19th-century game still lifes by the German painter Ferdinand Hoppe (1848–1890), each signed and dated “F. Hoppe 85” at lower left. Both works are oil on canvas, housed in period-style giltwood and walnut frames. Each composition depicts meticulously rendered trophies of the hunt — a hare and a mallard in one painting, and a pheasant with doves in the other — set against a rustic wooden background adorned with autumnal foliage. Hoppe’s refined brushwork and strong sense of natural texture reflect his academic training at the Düsseldorf Academy under Eugen Dücker, one of the foremost landscape painters of his time. Executed in 1885, these paintings represent the height of German realist still-life tradition, demonstrating Hoppe’s skill in balancing anatomical precision with a subdued, atmospheric palette. The works evoke both the quiet dignity and natural beauty of the 19th-century hunting culture.
