About the Item
A fantastical arrangement of blue—turquoise, royal and sky-blue flowers amid spherical shapes, Moon Flower is one of a new series of abstract oil and acrylic paintings created by Fiona Ackerman. The images, divided into two panels, were inspired by 17th century botanical illustrations by women naturalists.
“I realized that my botanical paintings were not really about nature but about my relationship to nature, my curiosity. My experience of nature as an outsider. About my hunger to understand nature. To feel at home in nature. My desire to love it and want to protect it rather than fear it.” Fiona Ackerman
Originally from Montreal, Fiona Ackerman studied painting at Concordia University and completed a BFA at the Emily Carr University of Art and Design in 2002. She has held more than 20 solo exhibitions internationally. Fiona’s studio practice extends beyond painting to include several large-scale murals, video and other public art projects. In her free time, she writes and records music and videos, often working with other musicians. She currently lives and works in Vancouver BC.

Originally from Montreal, Fiona Ackerman studied paintings at Concordia University and completing a BFA at Emily Carr University of Art and Design in 2002. She currently lives and works in Vancouver BC and exhibits her work internationally (Canada, Europe, USA, UK and Asia). Fiona’s studio practice extends beyond painting to include several large-scale murals, video projections and other public art projects. In her free time, she writes and records music and videos, often working collaboratively with other musicians. Rooted in abstraction, I want to push my work in divergent directions, to surprise myself, and keep the possibilities for my painting wide open. Working in series, I develop a stylistic language specific to the mood or conceptual objectives I'm working on. Over the years, my work has seen many different stylistic evolutions. I see my arc of work much like that of an author. Each series is like a new book, different in tone, style, and story. But they are all part of a larger archive, and each a meaningful piece of the whole. - Ackerman

Sandra Cohen’s “when we arrive in the middle of nowhere” is a 12 x 12 x .25 inch acrylic painting on tempered hardboard, in green, blue, pink, red, orange, and white. Abstracted wild flowers and greenery wave under a blue springtime sky, where a tiny plane is landing. A circular pattern of arrows moving in opposite directions is overlaid in white and intertwines with itself and the fine red lines that grow like stems outward from its unseen center. Inspired by the song “Autopilot” by Queens of the...
