About the Item

The picture is oils on canvas Giovanni Battista Ruoppolo (1629–1693) was an Italian Baroque painter from Naples, known primarily for his still-life works. He is considered a key figure in the development of still-life painting in southern Italy during the second half of the 17th century. Here are some key aspects of his life and work: Style: Ruoppolo specialized in paintings of flowers, fruit, and food (particularly seafood), which he depicted in a lush and exuberant style. His compositions often feature dark backgrounds, a technique reminiscent of Caravaggio's still-life works. As he matured, his paintings became more elaborate and decorative, possibly influenced by the work of Abraham Brueghel, who was active in Naples. Career: Ruoppolo was a highly successful artist whose works were sought after by the Neapolitan aristocracy and wealthy citizens. He also collaborated with other notable painters of his time, including Luca Giordano, who commissioned him to paint still-life elements for his works. Legacy: The 18th-century art biographer Bernardo De Dominici dedicated a biography to Ruoppolo, an unusual honor for a still-life specialist, which solidified his reputation as a leading figure in the genre. Ruoppolo's nephew, Giuseppe Ruoppolo, was also a still-life painter who worked in a similar style but was considered less skilled. Some of his notable works include: Bunches of Grapes around a Tree Trunk Still Life with Fruit and Dead Birds in a Landscape Still Life with Watermelons, Plums, Cherries, a Basket of Figs, Pears and a Monkey
