About the Item

Matinée au Soleil (Morning in the Sun) Acrylic on Canvas 40 x 30 cm Matinée au Soleil by Grégoire Mathias is a cubist portrait that reinterprets the human form through geometric fragmentation, capturing both the subject’s physicality and the ambiance of the scene in Mathias’s Diachronic Cubism style. It is an intimate exploration of light, geometry, and the quiet elegance of a morning scene. The work captures a serene moment fragmented into geometric planes, evoking both the stillness of a morning and the subtle energy of the sun’s first rays. The composition juxtaposes warm ochres, yellows, and earthy tones with cooler shades of blue and grey, creating a dynamic yet harmonious visual balance. The seated figure, abstracted into angular forms, suggests both human presence and the contemplative quality of solitude, while the background elements—table, fruit bowl, and morning newspaper—add layers of narrative and time. Through deconstruction and reconstruction, Mathias invites the viewer to engage with the interplay of moments within the same scene, a hallmark of his Diachronic Cubism style. The painting’s compact size (40 x 30 cm) belies the depth and complexity it holds, making it a versatile addition to collections that celebrate the blend of modern abstraction and human experience. Perfect For: Collectors of intimate cubist works, fans of modern compositions inspired by everyday moments, and admirers of Grégoire Mathias's unique style. Matinée au Soleil bridges the personal and the universal, making it a compelling piece for any setting. Keywords: Diachronic Cubism, Grégoire Mathias, cubist figure painting, acrylic on canvas, morning light artwork, contemporary French art, geometric abstraction, timeless moments in art. About the Artist: Grégoire Mathias, graduate of the National School of Fine Arts in Paris (ENSBA - École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts), is exhibiting his work at Sotheby's gallery in Périgueux, as well as in numerous galleries across Paris, New York, and Dublin. Mathias is the creator of diachronic cubism, an unexplored branch of cubism that depicts landscapes, interiors, everyday life scenes, and, most notably, the concept of time itself. This unique style is characterized by the deconstruction of subjects and light over specific periods of time. Since 2020, he has been designing UN posters through the World Federation for the United Nations Associations (WFUNA), becoming the first French artist to contribute to the organization after Picasso, Chagall, Miró, and Vasarely. Beyond his diachronic exploration of time, Grégoire Mathias’s cubist style stands out due to its unique combination of modern cubism with a figurative emphasis. Unlike traditional abstract cubism, his works maintain a strong connection to recognizable forms—such as horses or architectural landmarks—while incorporating the fragmented, geometric language of cubism. This blend creates a style that bridges modern abstraction with a clear narrative or subject, making his works accessible yet sophisticated. His paintings often evoke a sense of movement and vitality, emphasizing earthy tones and textures inspired by the natural or historic context of his subjects, like the Lascaux caves or French landmarks. Déplacement — Portrait in Diachronic cubism, Acrylic on canvas, 2025, French
Located in PÉRIGUEUX, FR
Deplacement Acrylic on canvas 60 x 92 cm “Déplacement” (“Displacement”) exemplifies Grégoire Mathias’s signature Diachronic Cubism — a contemporary evolution of Cubism that captures not only multiple perspectives in space, but also the passage of time within a single frame. In this work, intertwined faces and figures emerge through rhythmic geometric planes, suggesting both emotional movement and physical transition. The warm palette of ochre and sienna contrasts with sharp greys and whites, creating a powerful sense of fragmentation and reunion. Subtle red linework recalls the artist’s architectural precision, while the composition’s temporal layering evokes fleeting moments suspended between past and present. This piece reflects Mathias’s ongoing exploration of the human form through temporal geometry — a visual dialogue between motion, memory, and identity. Collector’s Insight: This work belongs to the artist’s larger inquiry into time and perspective, where emotion and structure coexist. It offers a bold yet intimate statement for modern interiors or collectors drawn to the lineage of Cubism reimagined for the 21st century. Perfect For: Collectors of figurative or abstract Cubism • Modern and contemporary interiors Collector’s Insight: This work belongs to the artist’s larger inquiry into time and perspective, where emotion and structure coexist.
