Description:
This richly coloured modernist gouache by Guy Nicod depicts an atmospheric harvest-themed still life, featuring vibrant bundles of golden wheat, a large woven basket, and a backdrop of warm decorative textiles. Painted with expressive, gestural brushwork, the composition is filled with energetic colour contrasts and layered textures that evoke the warmth and abundance of autumn.
Two dense sheaves of yellow wheat, accented with small red berry-like elements, dominate the lower portion of the composition. Their organic forms burst outward with lively directional strokes. Between them sits a large rounded basket, painted in deep brown tones with cross-hatched markings that suggest woven fibres. A dark vessel beneath the wheat provides structural grounding.
The upper half of the painting features a row of decorative hanging objects resembling patterned textiles or ceramics, rendered in earthy oranges, deep blues, and golden ochres. These vertical elements create a rhythmic backdrop reminiscent of a rustic interior, farmyard shed, or seasonal display.
