Condition: Good overall with light edge wear and small handling marks consistent with age. There are small tears where staples have been removed from the corners of the piece.
Description:
This striking gouache by Guy Nicod presents a dramatic, architecturally constructed still life built from bowls, plates, folded textiles, and vibrant clusters of red grapes or berries. The composition is layered with overlapping geometric planes in cool greys and blues, against which the intense red fruit stands out in vivid contrast. In the centre, a pale ceramic plate brims with red grapes, while lower bowls hold additional fruit, their rounded shapes softening the angular structure around them.
A sculptural jug or pitcher, rendered in gold and grey tones, emerges from the left side of the arrangement, adding height and weight to the composition. To the right, a dark circular vessel with a pale interior shape suggests another bowl or pot glimpsed from above. Scattered throughout the tableau are smaller dishes and containers, each containing fragments of fruit or reflected colour.
Nicod’s expressive gouache technique enhances the textural interplay of matte ceramic surfaces, glossy fruit, and layered folds of fabric or paper. The restrained grey palette, punctuated by cobalt blue and teal accents, creates a moody interior atmosphere reminiscent of studio still-life setups. The red fruit becomes the focal point, energising the composition with warmth and intensity.
