Description:
This vibrant and expressive gouache by Guy Nicod presents a rich, fruit-filled modernist still life featuring pineapples, pomegranates, and surrounding vessels arranged on a layered blue backdrop. Two bright yellow pineapples dominate the composition — one positioned on the lower right and one on the upper left — their spiked leaves rendered in vivid green strokes that contrast sharply with the deep indigo and sapphire tones of the drapery behind them.
Scattered throughout the scene are multiple pomegranates, identifiable by their rounded shape and intense red colouring. These fruit forms appear on various levels of the composition, giving the still life a rhythmic, almost architectural structure. On either side of the painting, dark rounded vessels cradle additional fruit, painted with expressive gestural marks and set against bold vertical swathes of red, purple, and ochre.
In the upper centre, Nicod introduces a dramatic burst of yellow and orange, suggesting flowers or light catching fabric folds, adding luminosity to the cool-toned palette.
