Condition: Fair to good overall condition with visible edge wear, small tears and losses along the bottom edge, and light handling marks throughout. Paper shows age-related creasing but remains stable. Colours remain strong, especially the reds and yellows.
Description:
This rich and vibrant gouache by Guy Nicod presents a dramatic still life dominated by cascading draped fabrics, hanging objects, and a vivid red flowering plant. The composition centres on a vertical column of crimson and violet cloth, flanked by sweeping panels of turquoise, ochre, blue, and deep red textiles that fill the scene with theatrical intensity. Above the fabrics hang several rounded hat-like forms in yellow, mauve, and soft green — their placement and shape suggesting items suspended from a studio wall or rack.
Beneath the drapery sits a lush red potted plant, its foliage rendered in expressive strokes of deep crimson and green. This grounded, organic element provides a counterbalance to the abstract, floating textiles above, introducing a sense of warmth and domestic familiarity.
Nicod’s handling of colour is bold and intuitive: saturated reds blend into sharper blues, while ochres and greens break up the vertical planes of fabric.
