Description:
This striking modernist gouache by French painter Guy Nicod presents a rare and unusual still life composition centred around an artist’s wooden mannequin, abstract blue figure studies, and a grouping of studio objects, all arranged within a dramatic setting of dark fabrics and layered textures. Painted in Nicod’s characteristic expressive style, the work plays with shape, movement and the relationship between the human form and the tools used to study it.
The mannequin stands to the left of the composition, its articulated limbs captured in quick, gestural strokes of pale blue and grey. Behind it, a pair of floating, loosely painted blue silhouettes echo the poses found in classical figure drawing sessions, suggesting motion, memory, or multiple viewpoints layered into a single image.
