Die Landschaftsbilder von Heinrich Krause zeigen neben Einflüssen des französischen Impressionismus und dessen Rezeption in Österreich vor allem eine klare Prägung durch Cezanne. Seine vibrierenden Farbflächen sind Ausgangspunkt für die Entwicklung eines unverkennbar eigenen Stils. Mit oft nur zwei Hauptfarben und einem strengen kompositorischen Aufbau entstehen meist menschenleere, formal stark zurückgenommene Landschaften, die eine stolze Erhabenheit ausstrahlen.
Porträts haben im Schaffen von Heinrich Krause einen hohen Stellenwert. Es gelingt ihm, in unaufdringlichen Darstellungen eindringliche Charaktere festzuhalten. Es ist immer wesentlich mehr als ein Moment, der konserviert wird: Die Dargestellten sichern sich ihre eigene Welt im Bild durch verschlossene Gestik oder abschweifenden Blick und öffnen sich erst bei näherer Betrachtung. Besonders ehrlich und aufschlussreich sind die Selbstporträts des Künstlers, die stets als eine Selbstbefragung und regelmäßige Standortbestimmung zu verstehen sind. Während sich Krause in jungen Jahren als selbstbewusster Maler mit ernstem Blick präsentiert, der die Utensilien seiner Profession gekonnt in Szene setzt, sind seine späten Selbstporträts eine beklemmende Vorwegnahme seiner beginnenden Erblindung, die letztendlich sein Schaffen beenden wird. Der Maler spart seine eigenen Augen in den Bildnissen aus und dennoch ist es nicht notwendigerweise ein leerer Blick, auf die der Betrachter stößt, sondern eine direkte, emotionale Vereinnahmung.
