Henry John Livens was born in 1858, in St Pancras, London the direct descendant of Jan Liebens who had left his native Holland in the 1600’s to paint a portrait of the King and subsequently settled in London. The name was anglicised over the years to become Livens. Livens married Sarah Waller in 1878 with whom he had 4 children: Bert, Amie, George and Rosie. Amie later joined a Convent at Finchley and became known as the ‘Painting Nun’, signing her works Sister Mary Etheldreda. By 1886, he was living in Watford with his family and by 1901 had moved to Hammersmith. Livens painted landscapes and still life and travelled extensively throughout the UK painting views of Wales, the Scottish Highlands and Surrey. Around 1911 he settled in Winchcombe, Gloucestershire with his wife Sarah and his two daughters where he lived until his death in 1933. A number of his works are held by South Ayrshire Council. He was a contemporary of William Henry Hunt's who also painted detailed pictures of fruit, flowers, blossom and birds' nests. He frequently used a mossy ground as a backdrop for his still lives. His works have been auctioned in all the major auction houses i.e. Bonhams, Christies, Sotheby’s and Phillips during the 1990’s.

"Floral still-life painting"
Located in Edinburgh, GB
This elegant floral still-life painting, executed in oil on canvas, showcases a meticulously arranged bouquet of roses, lilacs, and other blossoms in a gilded vase, placed on a reflective surface. The composition exudes a sense of classic beauty, reminiscent of Dutch Golden Age still-life traditions and 19th-century European academic painting. The rich color palette and detailed rendering of individual petals, leaves, and the metallic sheen of the vase highlight the artist’s mastery of light and texture. The soft, atmospheric background enhances the contrast between the delicate flowers and their surroundings, drawing attention to the vibrancy of the composition. Housed in an ornate gilded frame, this painting is an exquisite decorative piece that evokes the refinement and sophistication of traditional floral art...
