Oil on canvas Signed, Mercado, bottom right Jay Mercado was born in Sioux City, Iowa and raised in San Francisco, California. Farming and gardening have been an integral part of his family for generations. Through his work, Mercado continues this agricultural legacy, exploring, examining and celebrating what tends to be taken for granted, overlooked or dismissed. To him, hands in the soil, like sprouting roots, are our natural connection to the earth and he sees working the land as a seasonal rite whose grace and elegance are as understood as the harvest is important. His still life paintings are illuminated natural shapes. Out of context and over scale, they are sacred objects from the common ritual of raising crops. Similarly, his paintings of migrant laborers highlight our relationship to the land and to those who ceaseless efforts produce the food that nourishes our communities. Mercado states that, “All of us are related to agriculture since we all eat, but since small farms have mostly disappeared, we are gradually becoming more removed from the process by which food reaches our tables. A drive in any direction from here ultimately reveals a landscape dotted with laborers in fields of one crop or another. What I see underneath the ruffling blanket of its politics is a beauty and clarity defined by the act of working the land. But who does this work? Who are the people stooped for hours in the sun working a thankless but necessary job? The field laborer is connected to the earth in an arduous and vital way that few North Americans ever experience.” Another area of exploration for Jay Mercado is the pillow. “It cradles us while we sleep. An intimate sharer of time, it witnesses our dreams and acts as a spectator to loving, fighting, laughing and crying. Abstract and simple. Not just a pillow but only a pillow. A reliable friend. Therapeutic and healing, it conforms to our needs. A soft symbol of strength, the pillow is a magic cloud of comfort”, he states. Mercado studied painting at UCLA, Art Center College of Design, California College of Arts Crafts and the Academy of Art College throughout the 1980’s and 90’s.
