About the Item

Jean-Baptiste Robie (1821-1910) Belgian Bouquet of Flowers in the Countryside Signed "J. Robie" (lower left) Oil on panel This extraordinary floral still life embodies the height of Belgian artist Jean-Baptiste Robie’s talent. Exceptionally vivid, this bouquet of roses captures the fleeting beauty of nature with unmatched realism and poetic brilliance. His signature, highly coveted subject, Robie's flowers stand among the finest examples of 19th-century still life painting. A cascade of roses forms the mesmerizing focal point of this work, with their petals just beginning to fall. The arrangement bursts with tonal variety—from deep crimson and coral pinks to pale creams—each flower distinct yet harmoniously balanced within the composition. Robie's treatment of texture is remarkable: velvety petals, waxy foliage and glistening dewdrops are all rendered with delicate precision. His sensitivity to natural light and his layered brushwork bring depth and naturalism, transforming a simple subject into a meditation on beauty and impermanence. Born in Brussels in 1821, Jean-Baptiste Robie began his artistic journey largely self-taught before pursuing formal studies at the Royal Academy of Brussels. His devotion to floral subjects soon earned him critical acclaim, and he exhibited regularly at the Brussels Salon from 1843 to 1875, as well as at the Paris Salon. While he also explored landscapes and Orientalist themes later, his floral still lifes remain his signature achievement and command his highest auction results. His works reside in important museum collections worldwide, including the Victoria Albert Museum in London, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Royal Museums of Fine Arts Belgium. Dance of the Nymphs
By Paul Desire Trouillebert
Located in New Orleans, LA
This lyrical landscape entitled Dance of the Nymphs was composed by the French Barbizon painter Paul Désiré Trouillebert. A joyful scene of nymphs dancing the morning fog, the work closely resembles an important work by the great Camille Corot, which is now housed at the Musée d'Orsay (Paris). Renowned for his unique individuality that toed the line between the traditional and modern, Corot and his landscapes helped pave the way for an entire generation of Impressionists who followed him. Trouillebert perfectly captures the poetic atmosphere of Corot’s groundbreaking works, while also imbuing this scene with a freshness and character that is all his own. Trouillebert's oil on canvas is exemplary of the tradition of historical painting. The work perfectly combines a realistic depiction of the natural world with a spirited romanticism as his idealized nymph figures frolic playfully beneath a crisp morning sky. As a whole, it is a lovely composition executed with a level of skill and artistry that proves Trouillebert's exceptional talent in the arts. Born in Paris in 1831, Paul Désiré Trouillebert was a student of the academic painters Ernest Hébert...
