About the Item

Jean Frédéric COUTY Issoudun, 1829 - 1904 Oil on canvas 47 x 61 cm (63.5 x 79 cm) Signed and dated lower left "JFCouty / 1899" Very beautiful wooden frame and gilded stucco decorated with palmettes Jean Frédéric Couty is a French painter born in Issoudun in the center of France. He painted still lifes and landscapes, and he studied with Gustave Brion and Evariste Luminais. He exhibited at the Salon in Paris between 1864 and 1902. In 1900, he exhibited a painting entitled "Artichokes cooked and raw" which is probably our painting (dated 1899). A still life of fish by Couty is at the Louviers Museum in Normandy. This very beautiful still life, in very good condition, is a very decorative painting with its beautiful colors, the red of the cherries and the green of the artichokes in particular. The artichoke is traditionally seen as a sign of abundance and prosperity. It also evokes inner wealth and the gradual discovery of beauty. The cherry is often associated with femininity, fertility and even immortality. If we add the two carafes filled with wine - white and red - represented here, we beleive that this painting symbolizes the different forms of abundance whether it is wealth, opulence or fertility. Another meaning is possible: it could be an allegory of pleasure with the exotic element (the artichoke), intoxication (the wine) and the sweetness of Paradise and Religion (the cherry). We think of Baudelaire’s famous poem “Enivrez-vous”: “You must always be drunk, it's all there; it's the only question. To escape the horrible burden of time that breaks your shoulders and slopes you toward the earth, you have to get drunk without stopping. But on what? On wine, on poetry, or on virtue, whatever you like, but get drunk!"

Georges Paul MASURE (Active 1900s/1910s) Oil on canvas 80 x 65 cm (97 x 82cm with the frame) Signed and dated lower right "G. P. Masure / 1912" Painting exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants in 1913 (2032. « Fleurs et japoneries ») Beautiful 19th century frame Georges Paul Masure was a Parisian painter in the Montparnasse area. He exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants in the years 1900/1910. Our painting is the painting he exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants in 1913 under the number 2032 and titled "Flowers and Japaneries". It represents a still life with a bunch of flowers, a magnificent basket of oranges, a pomegranate and a Japanese sculpture with a little fisherman with a red Koi carp. 2500 years ago, when the son of Confucius was born, he received as a gift from King Shoko of Ro, a fish that was first called Koi. It represents the symbol of strength, because this fish was the only one able to go up the steam of the Yellow River. Owning a koi will long remain the prerogative of the Japanese nobility. The dominant colors in the painting are orange and red. And in Japanese Shinto...
