About the Item
An exceptional trompe l’oeil still life with red, pink, and yellow roses in a vase, bowls of peaches, and lemons, and other vessels and vases with varying textures by contemporary American artist Jeanne Duval (1956-). Duval was born in Peterborough, NH and has exhibited her fine work in galleries and shows across the United States, becoming well known for her realism still life paintings.
Duval works almost exclusively in oil paint, creating dramatic, highly detailed realist paintings that have been described as simultaneously realistic and surrealistic. Her work is noted for its meticulous attention to detail, reminiscent of 17th-century Dutch masters' still lifes. She is heavily influenced by Italian Baroque art, particularly the use of strong compositional arrangements and dramatic lighting (chiaroscuro) found in the works of Caravaggio and Zurbarán. Her works are held in many important public and private collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
Duval has received numerous honors and awards throughout her career, including multiple Fellowships from the MacDowell Colony, Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grants, an Ingram-Merrill Foundation Grant, and a National Endowment for the Arts Grant.
