About the Item

JOHANNES SCHIEFER – "LES FRUITES" Oil on Canvas ⚜ Signed Lower Left ⚜ Custom Conservation Frame A VIBRANT POST-IMPRESSIONIST STILL LIFE WITH MOUNTAIN LANDSCAPE BACKDROP In this richly layered oil on canvas from 1976, Johannes Schiefer unites two classic genres—still life and landscape—into a single, vibrant composition. Bursting with saturated reds, purples, and greens, the overflowing vase of fruit dominates the foreground, while the delicate outlines of a pale mountain range recede into the background. The juxtaposition between Schiefer’s energetic brushwork and the restraint of the minimalist landscape creates a balanced tension that feels both grounded and ethereal. Executed late in his career, this work reflects Schiefer’s gift for harmonizing color and form. It is presented in a complementary archival frame with a canvas liner, and remains in excellent condition. WHY COLLECT THIS WORK? ✓ Rare dual-genre composition combining still life and landscape ✓ Bold use of color in Schiefer’s mature post-impressionist style ✓ Hand signed by the artist, lower left ✓ Conservation framed in custom wood frame with canvas liner ✓ Ideal for collectors of modern European or American postwar painting ARTWORK DETAILS: ▸ Title: "Les Fruites" ▸ Artist: Johannes Schiefer (1896–1979) ▸ Medium: Oil on Canvas ▸ Year of Creation: 1976 ▸ Signature: Hand-Signed Lower Left ▸ Country of Creation: United States ▸ Dimensions: — ◼︎ Canvas Size: 20 x 24 inches — ◻︎ Framed Size: 27 x 30.875 x 1.5 inches ▸ Condition: Excellent – Strong surface quality and vibrant palette ▸ Framing: Custom Wood Frame with Canvas Liner – Ready to hang INCLUDED DOCUMENTATION: ✓ Certificate of Authenticity ✓ Artist Biography Document THE ARTIST: Born in Alsace-Lorraine in 1896, Johannes Schiefer was a German-French-American painter known for his richly colored landscapes, still lifes, and portraits. After winning the Prix de Rome at age 19, Schiefer studied at prestigious academies in Düsseldorf, Paris, and Rome before painting across Europe and Latin America. He eventually settled in the U.S. during WWII, where his work continued to evolve and gain national recognition. Over the following decades, he maintained studios in New York, Paris, and Los Angeles, and developed a reputation for stylistic versatility and a distinctive post-impressionist palette. His work was collected by institutions and prominent individuals alike—including a commission from Ethel Kennedy—and he exhibited in leading museums and galleries, such as the Museum of Modern Art (New York), Kunsthaus Hamburg, Wildenstein Co., and the San Francisco Museum. Schiefer also served as curator at the Parrish Art Museum in Long Island. He passed away in Manhattan in 1979 at age 83.
