John Houston was a Scottish painter and teacher.
Born in Buckhaven, Fife in 1930. As a boy Houston would ride horses at Musselburgh races and other meets for his father who sold horses. His talent for football was equal to that of his artistic promise, playing for Dundee United as a part-time professional before a knee injury ended his football career. He had started at Edinburgh College of Art whilst still playing football and studied under tutors including William George Gillies and Robin Philipson. This was a particularly optimistic and lively time for the college, with staff re-joining after the war and much social engagement between students of all year groups taking place. Among his fellow students were Alan Davie, David Michie and his future wife, Elizabeth Blackadder.
A lifelong love of travel began with a trip to Italy, alongside lifelong friend Michie after they graduated, before returning to Edinburgh to join the staff in 1955, where he would eventually become the deputy head of painting until his retirement. In this year he also married Blackadder, who was teaching at the college too; the couple were described by colleagues and students as inseparable. Houston cofounded the 57 Gallery in 1957 where his first solo show was held a year later. Throughout their life together Blackadder and Houston travelled widely and frequently with many trips throughout Europe, as well as Japan. In 1964, the artist won the prestigious Guthrie Award at the Royal Scottish Academy, sharing the prize with Michie.
Houston was invited to be artist in residence at the Prairie School, Wisconsin in 1969, where the vast landscapes alongside the exhibition of modern American art he saw in New York on the same trip influenced his later work, starting his series of 'sky pictures' upon returning to Scotland. He was elected to the Royal Scottish Academy in 1972, alongside Blackadder and was appointed OBE in 1990. His work was typically atmospheric, using rich, vivid colours and an Expressionistic style which was indebted to Edvard Munch, he was best known for his depictions of the East coast of Scotland particularly Bass Rock in Firth of Forth which one of his obituaries described as his personal emblem.
Houston received an honorary doctorate from Heriot-Watt University, in 2004 and was granted a retrospective at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art a year later. He died in 2008 and was survived by Blackadder. His work can be found in the collections of the National Galleries of Scotland, Perth Art Gallery and the Government Art Collection.

This painting shows Armstrong's earlier career as a theatre designer, with its subjects arranged on a window sill as if actors in a play; the leaf and muntin, painted in a similar tone of green, act as a mid-ground to the autumnal trees outside the Artist's London home. Painted after Armstrong had returned to the city from Lamorna, Cornwall, as a struggling artist, models were too expensive and so he resorted to using fruits and vegetables from his local market. Showing a Cycladic vessel that appears in other works from 1957 onwards, as illustrated in Lambirth's book, including Still life with Mushrooms from 1961. The distinctive brick-like pattern of Armstrong's brushstrokes shines through here.
John Armstrong was a painter of imaginative subjects, designer of film and stage sets, mural painter and book illustrator.
Born in Hastings, Sussex, John Rutherford Armstrong attended St Paul's School, London, and studied law at St John's College, Oxford, before taking up art at St John's Wood School of Art (1913-14). He served in the Royal Field Artillery (1914-19) before returning to St John's Wood School for a short period after the war. His first one-man exhibition was at the Leicester Galleries in 1928, where he first met members of the Unit One group, joining them for their 1933 exhibition. It was after this that Armstrong's work began to develop a Surrealist character.
Much of Armstrong's oeuvre has its foundation in classical legend, landscape, or imagery, surely understandable given his classical education and WW1 service in the Near East. Varied Greek vase forms regularly make an appearance in his work from the mid-1930s, notably in his GPO poster...

“Still Life, 1936” by Katharine "Kitty" Duff Church British Modern Oil Signed
Located in Yardley, PA
“Still Life, 1936” by Katharine "Kitty" Duff Church (British, 1910-1999).
This large, early painting by Katherine Church is among her finest canvases of the period. Characterized by its bold color palette, simplified forms, and expressive brushwork, this composition centers around a tabletop adorned with various objects: potted plants, a ceramic dish, bottles, and what appear to be books or papers.
The two potted plants provide contrasting elements: on the left, what appears to be a cyclamen with red blossoms and delicate leaves, and on the right, a lush green plant with darker foliage. These plants, painted with loose, textured strokes, add an organic quality to the otherwise structured arrangement.
The tabletop is cluttered yet thoughtfully composed, featuring additional objects like a clear, faceted glass bowl, a small bottle, and books or pads in striking red and green. The dynamic use of color blocks and the juxtaposition of shapes (round pots against rectangular books) create a sense of rhythm and harmony.
The background is darker and less defined, emphasizing the brightly lit tabletop. Church's brushwork is gestural and modernist, leaning toward abstraction, challenging traditional still life conventions.
This painting reflects Church’s interest in balancing everyday objects with bold artistic expression. It conveys both the simplicity and complexity of daily life, transforming an ordinary moment into a vibrant and engaging work of art.
This work is oil on canvas and is signed and dated in the lower right. It is housed in its original gessoed frame and retains various labels and inscriptions on the reverse.

About the artist:
Born in Highgate, north London, Katharine Church, known as ‘Kitty’ amongst friends and family, always wanted to paint. She trained at the Royal Academy of Arts between 1930-1933 and at the Slade between 1933 and 1934. In her early years Kitty exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy. Her first solo exhibition was in 1933 at the Wertheim Gallery. Other artists who exhibited there included Christopher Wood, Victor Pasmore and Cedric Morris. Kitty also showed with the New English Art Club, the London Group and between 1937-1947 her work was exhibited at the influential Lefevre Gallery, which supported avant-garde artists such as Henry Moore, Ben Nicholson and Barbara Hepworth. In 1954 the artist was invited to take part in the Figures in their setting exhibition held at the Tate Gallery.
Henry Tonks and Philip Wilson Steer had a strong influence on Kitty’s early work, but it was her friendship with Ivon Hitchens that liberated her painting technique.
In 1936 Kitty married Anthony West, the son of writers Rebecca West and H.G. Wells. The couple initially lived in London before moving to Quarry Farm, Chicksgrove, Tisbury, near Salisbury, where they brought up their children Caroline and Edmund. There they hosted many of their friends, including the New Zealand painter Frances Hodgkins. Other regular visitors before the War included John and Mywafany Piper, Ralph and Frances Partridge, Noel and Catharine Carrington, Julian Trevelyan and Mary Fedden. For many of those who visited Kitty would organise painting expeditions. After the war Kitty and Anthony separated, with Anthony moving to the United States.
Anthony West moved to the United States to work as a journalist for The New Yorker. In the early years after their parting Kitty visited most years with the children.
In the 1960s Kitty purchased Sutton House and ran the Hambledon Gallery at Blandford Forum. There she promoted the work of her early art-school friends Mary Fedden and Julian Trevelyan, alongside work by the Pipers, John Craxton...

Franz Mörscher, still life 1953, oil on canvas
By Franz Mörscher
Located in Saarbrücken, SL
Franz Mörscher
The composition of the painting is deliberately designed for reduction and corresponds to the idea of cultural minimalism and the new objectivity that developed in the 20th century. Mörscher chooses the rational, crystalline form of the representation of selected objects (vases, lemon, fruits?) and uses color as surface and line to create structure in the space.
In this composition, Mörscher reduces the classical means of perspective to create a pictorial space between object light and color.
The application of paint appears partially modeled. The natural crack and fissure network (Krakelee) of the sometimes layered paint application seems to be deliberately achieved.
The selection of the depicted objects is possibly also based on symbolic aspects. After the desolation of the war years, the painting speaks of the color world of the spirit of optimism of the 1950s.
