The realistic painted "17th century style' bouquets by Joran van der Haar, are always an eye-catcher in our gallery.
The colorful bouquets look natural but have a long history of months of meticulous and layered work. It is sometimes difficult to predict when Joran's work can withstand its own "test of criticism". In addition, the layered work with oil paint sometimes also ensures long drying times. Shortening this is undesirable.
In 2014 the artist started experimenting and painting with oil paint, flowers and insects soon turned out to be his preference. Again, this was a source of inspiration.
The artist about his work:
‘In the Rijksmuseum and Mauritshuis I found the still lifes of Jan Davidsz. de Heem, Jan van Huysum and Ambrosius Bosschaert have always been great. I can look at all the details in such a painting for a very long time and marvel at the texture and depth effect. These paintings were therefore the reason to paint a flower still life himself.
Van der Haar starts a new painting through a search for flowers with which he can form a bouquet together. Then he will decorate the bouquet and photograph it in all possible exposures. This playing with the light is an important aspect of the process. With this light he shows what the main subject is, how the colors together form a whole and also which colors get the leading role.
After drawing, an underpainting follows, after which many layers of oil paint follow that increasingly show the colors and shape that Joran has in mind. The depth, the 3D effect, is created by not only playing with the light, but also by constantly nuancing and discovering color in the shadows. Such a process means that it takes months before a painting can be called 'finished'.
The painting has a handmade black/grey wooden frame.

Joran van der Haar
Joran van der Haar studied illustration at the Utrecht School of the Arts from 1998–2002. After this training, he obtained his teaching qualification at the same academy between 2002–04. From 2006, he worked as a teacher in Hardenberg and combined this with artistry. Joran himself says, “It’s amazing to listen to Ludovico Einaudi’s music and paint for hours and hours. The smell of oil paint and mediums. Lock yourself from the outside world and everything around you and focus on the painting on your easel." Joran created his style after he graduated, but he started with drawing collages on which he used pen and ink and digital techniques to create colorful prints, which would be stuck onto Dibond en poured in epoxy. In 2014, he started painting with oil paint. After he saw an exhibition in a museum, he decided to paint insects and flowers.
