About the Item

Housed in an elaborate late nineteenth-century carved gilt frame lined with deep red velvet, the painting offers a harmonious composition of carefully arranged objects illuminated by a soft, raking light. On a wooden table partially draped with a white linen cloth, the artist has arrayed an assortment of fruit and fine vessels: translucent grapes and the spiraling peel of a freshly cut lemon spill over the edge of a pewter platter in the foreground, while a tall roemer wineglass and an ornate golden goblet stand nearby catching glints of light. The dark, subdued background and directional lighting create a dramatic chiaroscuro effect, heightening the three-dimensional presence of each element. Every object in the scene is balanced thoughtfully, demonstrating a keen sense of arrangement and a refined visual harmony characteristic of classical still life art. In keeping with the Flemish and Dutch still life traditions of the seventeenth century, many of these sumptuous details carry symbolic meaning. The ripe fruit and wine suggest abundance and sensory pleasure, yet their inevitable decay, implied by the peeled lemon’s curling rind and the perishable grapes, subtly reminds the viewer of life’s transience. Such vanitas undercurrents were common in still lifes of the Baroque era, wherein luxurious objects doubled as memento mori. Here, the glittering glass and gilded cup, emblems of refinement and prosperity, also allude to the ephemeral nature of worldly wealth and indulgence. Fine wine is soon consumed and gold, for all its luster, does not accompany one beyond the grave. Delehaye’s composition thus not only delights the eye with its visual opulence, but also echoes the moral themes of his seventeenth-century predecessors, quietly inviting reflection amid the splendor. Technically, this work showcases Delehaye’s meticulous approach to painting in oil on panel, a medium that allows for fine detail and a lustrous finish. His brushwork is precise and controlled, capturing a remarkable range of textures with nuanced realism. One observes the moist, translucent sheen of grape skins, the spongy pith of a peeled lemon, the soft folds of linen, and the mirror-like gleam of polished metal and glass, all rendered with painstaking skill. Light is managed with particular finesse: gentle highlights play across the curved glass and the gilded cup, while soft shadowing gives volume to each form. Delehaye likely employed subtle layering and glazing techniques reminiscent of the Old Masters, resulting in an image of exceptional clarity, depth, and tactile presence. Jos Delehaye was active in Belgium in the late nineteenth century and specialized in still life paintings that revived the spirit of the Flemish Golden Age. Working in an academic milieu often captivated by earlier art, he emulated the compositional opulence and technical excellence of the still life masters of the seventeenth century. His paintings, though created two centuries after the Dutch and Flemish Baroque, align closely with that tradition: they are intimate in scale yet rich in detail and symbolic nuance. This still life, like many of Delehaye’s works, stands as an homage to the Old Masters—a later artist’s re-engagement with the vanitas motifs and pictorial splendor of a bygone era. Through such works, Delehaye contributed to a revival of classical still life art in the late nineteenth century, effectively bridging his own time with the legacy of Baroque still life painting. signed lower right oil on panel unframed 13 × 18 cm (5.1 × 7.1 in) framed 37 × 43 cm (14.6 × 16.9 in) Provenance: European private collection

The Grape Seller - Workshop of Jacob Ochtervelt
Located in Stockholm, SE
Jacob Ochtervelt (Workshop) The Grape Seller oil on canvas unframed: 80.7 x 61 cm.; 31 ¾ x 24 in. framed: 109.5 x 89 cm.; 43 1/8 x 35 in. Essay: This captivating piece, originating from the studio of the revered Dutch artist Jacob Ochtervelt, mirrors the composition of a signed and dated 1669 canvas by Ochtervelt that is presently housed in the Hermitage museum. Its subject, "The Grape Seller" immerses us in a typical 17th-century interior, replete with characters from various strata of society. At the center, a fruit vendor is depicted bending over to weigh grapes for the buyer. A child hands some of the grapes to her mother to taste, their attentive maid standing by. The backdrop showcases typical Ochtervelt details: a hint of the city visible through the doorway, light filtering in through an overhead window, and a playful dog at their side. The exquisite quality of the piece is evident in the minutiae, such as the intricate detailing of the mother's earring, which in reality spans only a few millimeters yet boasts impressive attention to detail. Initially, Sotheby's considered this work to be an autograph piece by Ochtervelt. But due to some uncertainty, it was auctioned as Workshop of Jacob Ochtervelt. On the other hand, the esteemed Cabinet Turquin in Paris leans toward attributing the piece directly to Jacob Ochtervelt himself. The painting is framed in an authentic period frame, which has been delicately restored by Stockholm's Förgyllning och Bildhuggeri. The frame retains its age-old patina and, while in used condition, has minor imperfections adding to its charm. Another interesting thing worth to mention is the painting's provenance. It was once owned by the 1st Viscount Rothermere (1868-1940), the founder of the Daily Mail and Daily Mirror...
