About the Item

The painter has revived an old motif for this painting. The earliest flower still lifes in Europe originate from Early Netherlandish painting. Earlier flower paintings come from Western art. Leonardo da Vinci and Albrecht Dürer also painted flowers, but with a focus on botanical accuracy. Gassler has embedded this motif in a style influenced by Expressionism and New Objectivity. It shows an intense colorfulness in contrast to the dark background. The yellow of the flowers seems to be reflected on the table. The flowers appear to be slightly wilted and bend in all directions. The partly unclear contours create a mixture of leaves, blossoms and stems that can hardly be untangled. The painter was born in what is now the Czech Republic and studied painting in Wroclaw. His preferred subjects were still lifes, portraits and landscapes. In addition to painting, he also devoted himself to stage design and frescoes.
